Wandering hearts and mercy

In Jeremiah 16:5 (see scripture on left) God declares,
"I have taken away my peace" from Israel.
What a horrible declaration of God - that He would remove,
had removed, His peace with Israel because of their wandering hearts.

It makes me think...
Where does my heart wander?
What are the idols that turn my head?
What stands in dead, quiet defiance of my obedience
to my Redeemer God?
What are the things that call me away, a little at a time,
until I am worshipping at their dead, wooden feet?

Whatever those things, activities, relationships, dreams,
duties, vanities, etc. are -
they are removing God's peace - peace with God -
from my life!

Show me, Lord, and give me strength
to call them the idols that they are -
and be rid of them!!

".... for I will bring them back to their own land."
Ah, mercy!
In my repentance
He brings be back to His side.
He restores what my wanderings have destroyed.
A true Father's heart of compassion
meets me on the road,
throws the best robe around my stooped shoulders,
slides a ring of belonging on my filthy finger,
puts shoes on my blistered, calloused feet,
and takes me back to the place of peace -
rejoicing!
